Yahoo to 'outlaw' logging in via Facebook and Google
Yahoo announced their plans to gradually reduce the possibility to log in their services with Facebook and Google accounts. The company's spokesperson explained that Yahoo is moving towards their new goal â providing more personalized content to the users. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has previously shared her vision of what the company should transform into, highlighting that the main aim is to make it a mobile content portal. And the first step on the road of transformation into a âmore personalizedâ platform happens to be forcing users to create Yahoo IDs. Or getting rid of a huge part of their audience â Facebookers and Googlers, which only time will show.
Yahoo services include Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick'Em up, the first one to stop allowing external login credentials, the prominent Flickr and Tumblr, and Fantasy Sports. Third-party logins were first introduced back in 2010, and now the company is facing a complete turn-around, not without the help of the recently hired Marissa Mayer.
Marissa Mayer
So far the new member on Yahoo team has strengthened its ranking, which reflected in the stock price going up more than 30 percent. She also gave confidence to her employees, who were starting to worry about the company's future, and launched such big projects as Flickr, Yahoo Mail, and, just recently, News Digest, which is a series of digital tech- and food- magazines.
To make their intention even more obvious, Yahoo are planning to put app-install advertisement into their Android and iOS apps after having to watch Facebook succeed so evidently with a very similar ads scheme. It is quite understandable what Yahoo are going for, though the comments on various dashboards all over the Web make some of us doubt whether their users are attached to the services enough to create yet another account. A lot of those users are simply saying they will cut cold Yahoo services.
