YouTube Can Say How Bad Your Provider Is
Google is starting to rate your provider's quality. Actually, they just share their results with 'mortals'. The recently launched feature, which allows YouTube users from the US to get Google Video Quality Report, rates the Internet speed on a scale of three levels: «HD Verified» - you can set streaming resolution at 720p or higher and have the video play without buffering or interruptions; «Standard Definition» - you can have a lag-free resolution of no less than 360p; and «Lower Definition» - means that it's probably high time you changed your provider, as videos will load slo-o-owly and will often buffer at resolutions below 360p.
The report also demonstrates the quality of other providers in the geographic area of the user, thus suggesting a range of alternatives to their current ISP, or pushing forward the providers Google simply advertises. «If you’re regularly seeing videos buffer, this report can give you a better idea of why, as well as tips to make YouTube play better,» writes Jay Akkad, YouTube Product Manager, in his blog.
So, is it a way of showing that Google knows what's best for you? Well, it's still up to you to decide what to do with your ISP, but given the amount of information the tech giant possesses, that might be true. Anyway, if you want to get a better idea of how the system works, follow this link, or watch the cool video below.
