Twitter Obliges to Bind New Accounts to Phone Numbers
At the end of February, Twitter spoke of improving their troll-fighting system with a phone number binding operation. They spoke of inquiring a number from a user who abused someone by blocking his account till the ordered info is provided and the user undergoes a troll-base comparison to find out if this abuse is not his usual activity.
Since really troublesome users are quick to change accounts, Twitter needed a more powerful tool to have the possibility to track serial abusers. The network began with Tor browser, which allows its users to hide the IP and surf the web anonymously.
Now, to open a new Twitter account from Tor you will have to provide your phone number, while when registering from other browsers it is an optional feature. It is unclear whether this is due to considering Tor a troll tool (for its unique IP protection) or this is just a testing before the phone number binding becomes obligatory for all new account registrations.
