Apocalypse is coming, right? This November Hannes Sjoblad – the founder of BioNyfiken biohacker community from Sodermalm, Sweden organized an 'implant party' at a local tattoo studio where eight people of various occupations (all IT-related though) agreed to have their hands implanted with radio frequency identification chips.
This wasn't the first 'party' organized by Mr. Sjoblad, who also has the chip under his skin, but with these eight enthusiasts, the total number of his fellow thinkers is now 50. In the coming months the biohacker hopes to increase the number up to 100 volunteers using social networks, where he finds people who share his ideas on the technology.
“I am convinced that this technology is here to stay and we will think it nothing strange to have an implant in their hand." - said Sjoblad in his interview to BBC.
At present, the implant serves as a sort of key, which allows the owners to open their doors (if they have a pricey lock on their doors that supports the technology) or unlock an Android smartphone. But, as the leader of BioNyfiken says, with the spread of all sorts of fitness trackers and with the introduction of the Internet of things, the potential for the technology may go far beyond.
We do not know whether the chip code involves the use of 666, but don't get too scared. The chip can be easily removed in several minutes, and the purpose of the project, as Hannes Sjoblad says, is primarily to “open up interesting discussions about what it means to be human. This is not just for opening doors.”
