Snapchat Wants Its Users to Stop Using Third-Party Apps
Snapchat is getting really tired of users who utilize third-party apps thus willingly putting themselves and other people at risk, then acting all shocked and complaining when their files get leaked by the aforementioned applications. This is why the popular media-sharing service has decided to start actively campaigning against the use of third-party apps.
Snapchat is a very popular media-sharing app that works on Android and iOS smartphones. The app's main selling point is the fact that the photos and videos sent by the users self-destruct after being seen by the recipient. Most of the third-party apps connected to Snapchat offer a solution for saving the images received before they delete themselves, but that doesn't only go against the entire concept of using the service, but is also very unsafe as the private images might end up in the wrong hands or publicly available to anyone with an Internet connection.
Recently, there was a scandal about 200,000 private Snaps being leaked to the infamous forum 4Chan. Even though most of these photos weren't anything to be ashamed of, a small portion of them had more mature content, and even worse, some of these were selfies taken by minors. Initially, Snapchat got blamed for the situation, but later it turned out that the server which got hacked belonged a third-party app called Snapsaved.
So, it's easy to understand why Snapchat would take an active stance against third-party applications. From now on, Snapchat will detect when a user is utilizing an unauthorized app and notify him or her of it. Furthermore, the message will urge the users to change their usernames and passwords (for security reasons) and ask them to refrain from using third-party apps in the future. As far as we know, there aren't any authorized apps at the time, so any third-party tool will be flagged by the media-sharing service as potentially harmful.
